Trip overview

Travel, live and study in Niseko all while getting paid as a qualified ski instructor! Take your ski skills to the next level over a 3 week course, gaining a Level One NZSIA certification and then work as an instructor in the powder capital of the world.

The Ski Instructing in Niseko study trip is ideal for those interested in joining the snowsports industry or simply wanting to kick off a trip to Japan, enjoy some winter sports and earn some coin while you do it. Our partners in Japan are experts in snowsport training and certification and renowned for their capability to provide coaching and guidance to the very highest level. Not only will you further develop your own skills, knowledgeable trainers will teach you the fundamentals of instructing, skier analysis, lesson planning and presentation, and mountain safety. After gaining certification, put your new skills into practice as you teach beginner and novice level skiers how it's done, Niseko style!

We offer the complete package for those wanting to accompany their newfound snow skills with a paid real-world, international experience. With the essentials handled for you, like your training schedule, accommodation and even assistance with purchasing equipment (if you don’t wish to bring your own), all you need to do is pack your winter woollies and get ready to carve (and teach) it up in Niseko!

Trip details

Our partners in Japan are experts in snowsports training and certification, and renowned for their capability to provide coaching and guidance at the very highest level. Over the course of 3 weeks take your ski skills to the next level, gaining an NZSIA Level One certification and scoring yourself a paid job as a ski instructor!

Hit the ground running in your studies, knowing everything else is taken care of. The NZSIA Level One certification is an entry-level instructor qualification, giving students the tools and experience necessary to teach beginner and novice ski levels. Knowledgeable trainers will teach you how to safely explore and navigate the mountainous terrain of Niseko, while also educating you on the fundamental teaching models, class handling/safety, student analysis methods, technical information and so much more. To achieve certification, students must be able to ride all groomed terrain with good form and present effective lessons using the appropriate teaching methodologies. Although extremely rare, if you were to fail the skills test then never fear! Our partner will endeavour to get you a placement in something other than instructing, so you can still create some incredible memories in Niseko.

Not only are your highly knowledgeable trainers available to give you feedback on your progress, they are also the best people to ask about what to do when your day on the slopes is done! After a day of skiing, you may wish to head to the gym or give your muscles a break with a soak in a warm onsen bath. For those who just can’t get enough of the slopes, then night skiing in Niseko is the way to go, before heading into the village for some Aprés Ski, Japan-style. At the ski village, you can stock up on supplies at the convenience store or enjoy the nightlife at any of the local bars and restaurants. For convenience, shared accommodation is provided on site with kitchen facilities included. Once you have gained your certification, you will move into the staff quarters on site, which usually comes as an additional subsidised weekly cost, taken out of your wages.

Embrace this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to travel, study and work in Japan. Not only will you make new friends and immerse yourself in a new culture, you’ll earn a snowsport certification and a paid job in the powder capital of the world, Niseko!

Requirements

18-30

You must be eligible for a Japanese Working Holiday Visa. Intermediate ski experience is required, otherwise  pre-course training may be necessary for those who are not confident at this level or have not been on the snow for some time. Typically at LEAST 2 weeks of skiing or riding experience is required to joining a course. Please feel free to reach out if you are unsure of your ability. You may also be required to be vaccinated against Covid-19 to enter this destination at the time of your travel.

What extra costs will I have?

Flights, travel insurance, souvenirs, spending money, visa fees & accommodation fees after gaining certification.

Trip itinerary

Arrive

Today’s the day! Once you’ve touched down at New Chitose Airport (CTS), your included transfer will take you to your accommodation in the ski village at Niseko. If you’ve given yourself a few days between your arrival and the course start (which may incur an additional cost), use this time to get acquainted with your new surroundings and housemates!  On your first day, arrive at the resort and begin an orientation session by 9:30am at the very latest. Typically there is a trip into the main town to help you find your way around and shop for any equipment you may still require. Now we're ready to carve up some slopes!...or more likely take an easy ski on the mountain to find your ski legs and explore a bit.

Ongoing

Typically training will take place 4-5 days a week, consisting of one training session in the morning (9:30am - 12:00pm) and another in the afternoon (1:30pm - 3:30pm). Students will have a break between classes for lunch or to sneak in some extra practice. Otherwise, the remaining days of your week are yours to explore this beautiful part of the world! If you’d like, ask your instructor about some of the best places to visit while here. Spend hours soaking in a warm onsen bath, head into town for some shopping, even head back out onto the slopes for some free skiing.  After receiving your Level One NZSIA certification, it's time to put your new skills into practice as you start working on-site as a ski instructor! You will be teaching beginners and novice level skiers, showing them the ins and outs of the slopes (and maybe a trick or two!). You’ll be staying in heavily subsidised staff accommodation and get a season ski pass, so you can hit the slopes with your new colleagues and travel buddies! We’ll constantly keep in touch with you throughout your stay. If at any point during your trip you need advice or support, our team will be on hand to answer all your questions. Don’t forget you can jump on our social media pages too or buzz our 24/7 emergency support line for urgent matters.

Can I travel with a friend?

But wait there's more! What happens if COVID affects my trip?

If you have to make any changes to your departure date, you’re protected with our Lifetime Deposit Guarantee and our Ultimate Corona Booking Flexibility. With this, we will change your trip dates for free. If this doesn’t fit around you and you can’t go on your trip anymore, we will give you a 100% refund in the form of a Trip Credit with us (See terms). If you’re unable to use it, you can also transfer that credit to someone else for them to put towards any trip too.

If you’re affected by Covid-19 while you’re overseas, you will have all the support you need from our team or partners in-country as well as have access to our 24/7 Global Emergency Line. We recommend travellers purchase Global Travel Cover travel insurance that provides Covid-19 medical protection too.

Do I need to be vaccinated to book?

As border restrictions for countries begin to ease, being fully vaccinated will maximise the number of locations you can visit. So while you are not legally required to be vaccinated, and it’s also not a requirement to travel with us, it will limit some of the countries that you can visit and may make it harder to travel through over the next 12-18 months. We highly recommend our travellers look at the current travel restrictions of their destination, speak with a medical professional or get in touch with our team for travel advice.

What happens if I want to cancel my trip?

Our Ultimate Corona Booking Flexibility means you can change your trip’s start date up to 84* days before departure without incurring any charges when you rebook it for any time (or even any other trip) in the next 2 years from your original start date.

In the event that you want to cancel your booking altogether, if you give us over 84* days notice you can do so with only a 50% cancellation fee. Your refund of the balance will come in the form of a Store Credit which you can put towards booking absolutely anything travel related with your Travel Concierge within the next 2 years!

*Some select trips excluded, including Teach (Spain, Italy & Czech Republic) and USA (Summer Camp, Working Holiday and Hotel Professional), and others as listed in Booking Conditions.
